Dr. Arwin Tan
Dr. Arwin Tan studied choral conducting and musicology at the University of the Philippines, College of Music, and graduated magna cum laude and valedictorian of class 2000. He is the founder and choirmaster of Novo Concertante Manila, a four-time “Ani ng Dangal” awardee and currently ranks as no. 3 among the Top 1000 Mixed Choirs of the World by Interkultur, Germany. He has sung with the Philippine Madrigal Singers from 1998-2002, under the late National Artist, Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion. He is an active choral clinician and has given workshops in many parts of the Philippines and Southeast Asia, and he has sat as juror in many national and international choral competitions (Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Italy). Arwin chaired the Choir Category in the 2014 and 2017 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA), and he has been the Music Director of the Government Choral Competition hosted by the Civil Service Commission since 2015.
He is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Music, under the Department of Musicology. He is currently the coordinator of the UP College of Music Extension Program. Arwin has published articles and reviews for Humanities Diliman, Saliksik E-Journal, Musika Jornal, Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities, Asian Journal, and CAS Review. He has also presented papers in national and international conferences (Manila, Shanghai, Adelaide, Limerick, and Kota Kinabalu). He was adjudged the Most Outstanding Conductor Award at the 2012 Asia Cantate International Choral Competition held in Thailand. He has been named “Most Outstanding Alumnus” of St. Stephen’s High School in 2013. UP has bestowed on him the UP Artist Award for the years 2013-2015, and the International Publications Award in 2015, in recognition of his artistic and scholarly contributions. |
